Former Police Officer Appeals For Reinstatement After Years of Mental Health Struggle

Nigeria Police Force

A former Police Officer, Grace Usang, has made an emotional appeal to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, seeking compassionate reinstatement into the Nigeria Police Force after nearly two decades out of service due to psychological trauma.

In a letter dated January 8, 2026, and addressed through the Commissioner of Police, Cross River State Command and made available to CrossRiverWatch, Usang narrated how a mental health crisis derailed her promising career in the Force, forcing her into years of absence, homelessness and eventual rehabilitation.

“I was enlisted into the Force in 2001 with passion and dedication to serve my country, however, in 2006, I unknowingly slipped into a prolonged psychological trauma that resulted in an unintentional absence from duty at Airport Division in Calabar,” she wrote.

According to her appeal, the condition was neither diagnosed nor treated at the time, leaving her “vulnerable and without support.” She disclosed that for several years she wandered in a state of mental instability until salvation came unexpectedly.

“For several years, I wandered in a state of mental instability until I was found by a kindhearted individual who, with the help of a prophetic church in Calabar, ensured I received proper rehabilitation. By the grace of God, I regained full mental stability and wellness in 2015.”

Despite recovering over a decade ago, the former officer said fear, uncertainty and stigma prevented her from returning to the Force or formally explaining her condition, forcing her to struggle for survival.

“Since then, I have struggled to reintegrate into the society, unsure of how to return to the Force or explain my situation. I took up trading and tailoring to survive and remain productive. However, I have never lost the passion and desire to return to service.”

Now declaring herself medically and psychologically fit, Usang is appealing for what she described as a “second chance” to serve the nation.

“I am now fully sound in mind and body and with utmost humility, I appeal to the Nigeria Police Force for a second chance. I am willing to undergo any medical and psychological evaluation required and to be reabsorbed under any condition the Force deems fit.” she appealed

Expressing deep regret over her unexplained absence, she pledged renewed loyalty and commitment if reinstated.

“I regret the circumstances that led to my disappearance, and I assure you of my steadfast loyalty, commitment and a strong sense of purpose to serve again, if granted the opportunity,” the letter read.
