The Cross River State Government has imposed five-day dusk-to-dawn curfew on warring communities in the state -Ugep and Idomi, following renewed tensions over age-long land dispute.
The curfew, which takes immediate effect, will run daily from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM according to a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Erasmus Ekpang.
The government said the decision was approved by Governor Bassey Otu as part of efforts to prevent further escalation of the conflict and maintain peace and security in the affected communities.
According to the statement, the curfew follows the outcome of a peace meeting held on June 11, 2026, and chaired by the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey.
The meeting was attended by the State Surveyor General, officials of the State Boundary Commission, and representatives of the Ugep and Idomi communities.
State Command of the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies are directed to ensure strict enforcement of the curfew, warning that violators would face appropriate sanctions.
The Governor also instructed security agencies to guarantee the free movement of vehicles along the Ugep-Ikom Highway throughout the curfew period, ensuring that commuters and motorists are not hindered.
Meanwhile, the Executive Chairman and Paramount Ruler of Yakurr Local Government Area, clan heads, and other stakeholders have been urged to collaborate with security agencies in promoting peace and maintaining order in the area.
The government reiterated its commitment to resolving the land dispute through peaceful and lawful means, assuring residents that all necessary steps are being taken to achieve a fair and lasting solution.
Residents of both communities are appealed to remain calm, law-abiding, and supportive of ongoing efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability.
