The Governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Otu has consoled with families of Calabar tragic flood and landslide that claimed lives.
Cries of a grieving mother and father echoed across Ikot Awatim Community in Ikot Ansa, Calabar Municipality Local Government Area of the State, after a devastating landslide triggered by torrential rainfall buried five people alive – four siblings from the same family and one other.
The tragedy occurred on Friday night, 10 July 2026, after hours of heavy rainfall that has continued to batter Calabar, causing widespread flooding and destruction of property in several parts of the city.
Residents were left in shock and mourning as community youths mounted frantic rescue efforts through the night, only to recover the lifeless bodies of the victims from the rubble.

Recall that a heavy downpour witnessed in Calabar on Thursday, July 9, 2026, left a one-year-old baby dead after ferocious flood broke into an apartment along Mayne Avenue by Atu Street, Calabar South Local Government Area of the state.
Governor Otu while paying a visit to some of the victims expressed deep sorrow over the recent incidents, describing the destruction and loss of lives as heartbreaking.
He extended heartfelt condolences to families who lost loved ones, acknowledging that no words could ease the pain caused by the tragedy.
He assured residents that the government remains committed to implementing decisive and proactive measures to reduce the risk of future flooding by strengthening flood mitigation strategies and improving emergency response systems.

While noting that the lives lost cannot be restored, the Governor emphasized that every effort would be made to prevent a recurrence and better protect communities from similar disasters.
Addressing affected residents, he assured them that they would not be left to face the aftermath alone, pledging continued government support to help rebuild lives, restore hope, and deliver long-term solutions to enhance resilience against future flooding.
