Many Residents in parts of Calabar South Local Government Area, have continuously raised concerns over dumping of refuse in the gutters as such results in a clogged drainage system, warning that the situation causes flooding, serious health and environmental risks.
In a visit to some areas in the LGA, several gutters are clogged with plastic bottles, nylon bags, food waste, and other debris. The blocked drainage channels have prevented the free flow of water, leaving stagnant pools that send out unpleasant odors.
Some of the areas visited in Calabar South include Afokang, Howell, St. Mary, Essien, Ekpo Abasi, New Airport road and others.
A resident in Afokang, His Highness Chief Eyo Coco Bassey, said “the gutters have become the dumping site for the villagers.”

He added that they once had a refuse bin along Afokang Street but was suddenly removed some years back, expressing deep health concern about indiscriminate dumping of refuse in gutters.
Some traders operating businesses near the affected areas complained that the repugnant smell from the gutters discourages customers and affects business activities.
Health experts warn that clogged drainage systems can contribute to outbreaks of malaria, cholera, and other waterborne diseases. It is also noted that poor waste disposal practices worsen environmental degradation and threaten public health.
Residents in these communities have called on the State Ministry of Environment and Health to provide waste bins and ensure regular waste collection.
