Two persons escaped death as a Lafarge cement truck veered off a major highway in Calabar, the Cross River State capital on Tuesday.

The accident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday around the Calabar International Conference Center (CICC) roundabout of Murtala Muhammed Highway.

The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr. Innocent Etuk, while confirming the incident, said the truck loaded with cement lost control at the roundabout due to over speeding.

He disclosed that two were injured in the accident but no life was lost.

However eyewitnesses say the vehicle had a brake failure as the driver attempted to navigate the roundabout.

The truck climbed the pavement separating the dual carriageway, veered into the opposite lane, and sent motorists and other road users scrambling for safety before crashing into a tree and coming to a stop.

Officials of the Cross River State Ministry of Environment and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) were seen clearing fallen tree branches and other debris from the road to restore the free flow of traffic.

According to the Sector Commander, the incident has been escalated to Lafarge Management.
