The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 54-year-old commercial mini-bus driver, identified as Godwin Okoko, in connection with the alleged murder of an official of the Traffic Management and Regulatory Agency (TRAMRA) during an enforcement operation in Calabar.
The incident occurred on Monday, May 25, 2026, at about 9:45 a.m. in the Marian Hill area of the state capital.
Confirming the arrest, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said police received a distress report indicating that TRAMRA officials were allegedly attacked while carrying out traffic enforcement duties involving a commercial driver suspected of violating traffic regulations.
According to the police, preliminary investigation revealed that three TRAMRA officials sustained injuries during the altercation.
One of the officials was allegedly stabbed in the chest with a screwdriver and was rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment but was later confirmed dead by medical personnel. Two other injured officials are currently receiving treatment and responding positively.
ASP Eitokpah stated that police operatives responded to the scene shortly after the incident, leading to the arrest of the suspect.
The suspect is presently in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Calabar, while investigations continue to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
