The day was bright and the atmosphere was fair enough for a good ride but a 54-year-old Nigeria’s Customs Officer, Prince Etteng did not know what tragedy that was ahead. Death was hanging across numerous potholes.
He died not because he was sick or on his duty post. He was not attacked and killed by men of the underworld nor did he die due to accidental discharge. Potholes led to this demise.
This was the report of a lone fatal motor accident which occurred on Monday, 7 September 2026, at about 2:56PM along the Ikom–Calabar Highway, near Alesi Village, Ikom Local Government Area of Cross River State.
Preliminary findings indicate that the victim Etteng, a Customs Officer serving at Mfum Border, Etung LGA, kissed the earth goodbye after he lost control of his vehicle while attempting to avoid a pothole. The vehicle veered into the bush and collided with a tree.
According to the Cross River State Police Command through its spokesperson, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, the Officer was rushed to Holy Family Hospital, Ikom, where he was confirmed dead by a medical doctor. His remains were subsequently deposited at the hospital mortuary.
In a release, the Command commiserated with the deceased’s family, colleagues and the Nigeria Customs Service, and urges motorists to exercise caution, avoid excessive speed and remain vigilant while driving.
