The Cross River State Police Command is investigating an alleged unauthorized hernia surgery at a private clinic in Ekori, Yakurr Local Government Area, while a 22-year-old man has been arrested in the same community over a motorcycle suspected to have been stolen from Ikom Local Government Area.
The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, disclosed this in separate statements issued on September 12 and 13, 2026.
In the first incident, a 60-year-old man, identified as Ukpan, reportedly underwent a hernia procedure at a private clinic in Ekori on September 8 and was discharged the same day.
According to the police, the patient developed complications and was taken to Ugep General Hospital on September 11 by Bassey Otu Bassey, 33, where members of his family allegedly attempted to attack Bassey over concerns about his professional status and role in the procedure.
Police said Bassey was taken into custody after officers intervened to prevent the alleged mob action.
During preliminary questioning, Bassey reportedly said he was a theatre assistant who carried out the procedure in the absence of his principal. The police said they were verifying his professional qualifications and the circumstances surrounding the operation.
The Command said it had not reached a conclusion on whether the patient’s complication were caused by the procedure or whether criminal liability arose, pending medical and professional findings.
While the state police command said Ason Onen Usang, 22, from Abi Local Government Area, was arrested around 9 p.m. on September 9 by officers of Ekori Police Division while allegedly attempting to sell an unregistered Dayang motorcycle suspected to have been stolen from Ikom.
The motorcycle, bearing chassis number LKIPCKL10M1086477 and engine number DY156EMI7133995, was reportedly found in the suspect’s possession.
Police said Usang claimed to have purchased the motorcycle from an unidentified person but could not provide the seller’s identity, purchase documents or other verifiable evidence of the transaction.
The police said investigators were working to establish the motorcycle’s origin, identify its rightful owner and trace the alleged seller, adding that the investigation would determine whether other persons were involved.
