About 12 lives have been lost to separate auto crashes in two days in Calabar the Cross River State capital and environs.
CrossRiverWatch findings reveal a man was burnt to death Tuesday, when the vehicle he was traveling in suddenly went up in flames around 4PM Tuesday, at Murtala Muhammed Highway, after Nigeria Navy reference hospital.
Eye witness accounts has it that, the bus, colored white with “KTA 205 XA” all that was left on the license registration plate was allegedly heading to Uyo when it pulled over with the driver rushing out and opening the booth while passengers struggled to come down through the large door as thick black smoke billowed out of the van which caught fire seconds later.
The driver escaped with other passengers with one man burnt to death with his genital organ the only thing proving he was male.
The State’s Quick Intervention Squad fire truck arrived about 15 minutes after the bus went up in flames and put out the fire but it was late for the victim who was burnt beyond recognition.
Sympathisers and government officials thronged the scene which caused traffic jam for up to 100 metres either way of the scene of the accident.
Police sources also reliably informed this reporter that 7 lives were also lost Monday, at Ikot Eneobong axis of 8 miles in Calabar when a trucked rammed into a smaller commercial vehicle due to alleged brake failure.
The smaller vehicle is said to have carried a pregnant woman with four children returning from school among others.
Efforts made to locate the scene proved abortive as it was already dark as the source had earlier said the vehicle has since been removed while the truck driver is still at large.
Unconfirmed reports also say another vehicle conveying passengers from Ogoja to Calabar also had an accident on the road and 4 Catholic Nuns and other passengers on board were feared dead.
