The Cross River State Commissioner for Education, Mr. Godwin Ettah has disclosed that within the next budgetary year, the salaries of primary school teachers will be handled by the State Government rather than the Local Governments.

The Commissioner said this at the 2016 revised budget hearing by the Cross River State House of Assembly Committee on Finance and Appropriation.

The Commissioner asserted that as the Chairman of the Forum of Education Commissioners he has done an extensive research across the country and has seen “that Cross River is among the only few states that still have the Local Government handling teachers’ salary”.

He further added that the State Executive has given a nod to it and approval for commencement is underway.

Earlier, Chairman of the Committee and member representing Yakurr 11 State constituency, Hon. Eteng Williams said the budget review was necessary to assess MDAs performance under the 2016 fiscal year and to properly plan for the 2017 budget which will soon be placed before the House.

His words, “Early this year we passed the 2016 appropriation bill and some of the projects we are looking at today were not contemplated then, and also considering the economic realities that is facing us now. Also, some of these projects were underestimated, others overestimated, and some others are no longer feasible, all these will be taken care of”.
