Prevent Abuse Against Children Today (PACT) Cross River State, a network of NGO’s with focus on child care has held a celebration in Calabar, the Cross River State capital in commemoration of the 2016 Universal Children’s Day.

Speaking at the event, the Secretary of PACT, Mrs. Theresa Okpa said the event is to celebrate children, bring them together to have fun, showcase their talents and encourage guardians and parents that children possess something within them and therefore need to be cared and catered for.

The Secretary further added that the event was also held to draw attention to the plight and rights of the children. To let people know that these children have rights and encourage everyone to work towards a society that is fit for the child to thrive in.

Also speaking, the Executive Secretary, Basic Rights Council Initiative (BRCI), an Ambassador of PACT, Barrister James Ibor added that every 20th of November all over the world, NGO’s and Governments are encouraged to celebrate children as the day was set aside by the United Nations in 1954 to be celebrated as such.

He used the opportunity to call on the Nigeria Government and the Cross River State Government to implement the Child Rights Law.

His words: “We are calling on the Cross River State Government to implement the Child Rights Law by ensuring the functionality of the Family Court.”

The program featured drama presentation, exhibition, singing, dancing and experience sharing.
