The Chairman of Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) Barrister Ekpo Nta today in Calabar, said the University of Calabar, Unical will soon commence anti-corruption courses as the school is one of the only two picked from the country amongst 20 world universities where anti-corruption studies will be initiated as a means of checking the societal menace.
The ICPC boss also warned against the patronage of some 67 fake Universities by applicants seeking admission into the nation’s Ivory towers.
Ekpo Nta gave the warning while speaking at the 22nd International conference on African Literature and English Language ICALEL 2013, Corruption and National Security.
He urged Nigerians seeking to know Universities that are awarding fake Degrees to visit the website of National University Commission (NUC), so that their wards will not fall a prey to the illegal Universities.
He said that the ICPC is bracing up its lace to deal decisively with operators of such fake tertiary institutions.
The Chairman maintained that ICPC is poised to fighting corrupt practices in the nation’s tertiary institutions because the commission is committed to building a strong and virile nation.
On examination malpractices, Ekpo Nta said the ICPC is currently undertaking a far reaching review that would help the commission store names of students caught in the web of malpractices so that when they graduate and wish to contest any political office, the commission can fall back on the data base to fish them out and perhaps stop them from vying for such public office.
He also warned students against getting involved in sexual harassment as ICPC has set up hotlines that would help students give distress calls to the commission adding that he would do anything humanly possible to deal ruthlessly with culprits.
Also speaking, Head of Department (HOD) of English and Literary studies, University of Calabar, Dr. Stella Ansa said that the conference became necessary as part of the contribution to tacking the issue of corruption which has stunted our national development.
