Introduction

There are different definitions of who a youth is. While the Catholic Church categorizes those between age 13 and 35 as youths, the revised youth policy in Nigeria puts youths as those between the ages of 18 and 29. However, the United Nation’s describes been a your as a transition period and not a fixed age group.

The youths are said to be future leaders as the form the bulk of the work force of any society due to their strength, number among other things.

The importance of the youths led to August 12th been set aside to mark International Youth Day. The annual event is to bring youth issues to the attention of the international community and to celebrate the potentials of youth as active partners in the global society.

First celebrated in 1999, by the United Nations. The special day was mapped out on a recommendation made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth in Lisbon to the United Nations General Assembly. Since then, the day is celebrated across the world via various campaigns, events, and community concerts to convey the socio-economic and socio-political issues that youth face.

Despite these, the argument of who exactly a youth is, has continuously raged on.

Apart from developing countries, the youth from the third world countries to date, fight for basic necessities of life like food, shelter, health, education, and employment.

This, analyst posit, has led to youths, not been able to contribute positively to nation building with the blame often laid on the trends of a fast paced life promoted by peer pressure, unemployment, poverty, parental pressure, influence of western cultures, cyber crime among others.
