The Plant Operators of United Cement Company of Nigeria Plc, UNICEM, Calabar, have said that they will not return to work or hold discussions with the management until their sacked leaders were recalled.
The leader of the workers, Mr Blessed Okokon made their position known on Monday in Calabar at an informal meeting with the Plant Manager of UniCem, Mr Samba Katari.
Okokon, Chairman of National Union of Chemical, Footwear, Rubber, Leather and Non-Metallic Products Employees UniCem branch, insisted the sacked union leaders were their nominees.
“After the reinstatement of our leaders, we will then begin negotiation with management on the condition of service for UniCem workers, ‘’ they said.
In his response, Samba said although, he was not officially delegated by the management to meet with the workers, it was necessary to find ways of resolving the conflict between the operators and management.
He said that there was need for the workers to send representatives, other than the sacked executives, to dialogue with management on how to find an amicable solution to the crisis.
It would be recalled that the workers had, two weeks ago, stopped work in solidarity with their union executives who were sacked by UniCem management.
