OUR LIST FOR YOU
Batumi Botanical Garden on the Black Sea
The 114-hectare park, which dates back to 1912, is home to flowers and plants from nine geographical zones, and the arboretum counts eight sections: Transcaucasia, Mediterranean, East Asia, Himalaya, North America, Mexico, South America, and Australia.
It is located about nine kilometers from the popular city of Batumi and is an absolute resting place. Here you can take a relaxing walk through breathtaking nature and enjoy the beautiful view of the sea in the Bay of Batumi from the many terraces.
Bagrati Cathedral
We will go to the town of Kutaisi, or rather to the Bagrati Cathedral. It is located in the center of the small town and is considered a very special architectural monument of Georgia. The cathedral stands on the mountain Ukimerioni. As a ruin, it was already declared a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1994, but after reconstruction in 2017, it was removed from the World Heritage List again.
The cathedral was considered a ruin from its destruction in the 16th century until 2011 but was then lavishly restored and completely rebuilt between 2011 and 2012. Those who visit the structure will be amazed by the large dome, octagonal pillars, and turquoise blue roofs.
Dawit Garedja: the oldest monastery in Georgia
Dawit Garedscha Monastery is a Georgian Orthodox monastery in the east of the country and owes its name to its founder Dawit. The complex is located in the steppe desert of Garedja and has a considerable size: The complex of the cave monastery extends over 25 kilometers and consists of several smaller buildings, each of which can accommodate about ten monks.
The sight is also an ideal place from which to explore the desert landscape in peace. You are in a rather remote area on the border with Azerbaijan. Good to know: In summer it can get extremely hot in Garjah, so we recommend that you avoid the midday sun.
Gergetier Trinity Church
The Holy Trinity monastery complex was built on the southern slope of the Mkinvartsveri glacier near Stepantsminda. The Georgian Orthodox church was built in the 1430s and is considered an outstanding example of vernacular architecture. The Trinity Church is the largest church in the country and is located at 2170 meters above sea level.
Many locals gather here on July 16 to celebrate “Gergetoba”, the day of spiritual love. Since there are several paths leading up to the church, some visitors prefer to hike from Stepantsminda to the church and enjoy the great view on top of it. The walk takes about one and a half to two hours.
The Georgian Military Road
Until the end of the 19th century, the Georgian Army Road was the most important connection from Georgia to Russia. It runs along a millennia-old caravan route that led many travelers to the lands of the Orient. It is 213 kilometers long and even reaches an altitude of 2382 meters in between.
But what exactly makes the road so special? The Army Road runs across the Great Caucasus and thus through truly spectacular landscapes. In addition, you will encounter numerous sights on your journey, such as the Ananuri Weir Church or the Trinity Church of Gergeti. In any case, a trip across the Great Caucasus is a unique experience and the Georgian Army Road offers the perfect route for this.
