The Cross River State Governor Senator Bassey Otu has directed the immediate disbandment of the Committee on Illegal Mining in the State.
The directive was contained in a Press Release signed by his Chief Press Secretary Emmanuel, and obtained by CrossRiverWatch in Calabar, on September 13, 2023.
According to the release, the directive is, “sequel to the appointment into office of a substantive Commissioner for Mineral Resources in the State.”
The release added that the “Ministry has the mandate to oversee all issues relating to minerals exploration, exploitation and all other sundry matters relating to mining and its regulation.”
He added: “Members of the defunct committee are advised to hand over all government property in their possession to the Office of the Secretary to the State Government immediately.”
However, the Governor “thanks the members of the defunct Committee on Illegal Mining for their services to the State and wishes them well in their future endeavors.”
The defunct committee was headed by Engr. Ukam Ngwu Ngwu and had 32 members. The committee was announced on June 14 and served for 90 days between June 14 to September 13, 2023.
