Senator Liyel Imoke, the Cross River State Governor who has been away to Maryland in the United States of America to spend his “accumulated leave” and sort out health issues is expected to resume duties on the 6th of December baring any hitch.
Governor Imoke who has been away from the state since the 6th of November retrospectively applied to the State House of Assembly on the 5th of December seeking for permission to proceed on the said accumulated leave.
Mr Christian Ita, his Chief Press Secretary told crossriverwatch in reaction to a report about the governor by a national magazine that, lumping Imoke in the group of absentee governors like Suntai of Taraba State and Chime of Enugu State was “wrong because governor Imoke formally applied to the State House of Assembly which granted his request and it is expected that with my 5th of December 2012 press statement on the issue which explicitly said two months, then one ought to have known that 6th of February makes it two months”.
According to Ita it is not only after the two months have gone past but ninety days that Imoke could be said to be absentee. “What does the constitution say about a governor not being in office? It says ninety days and our governor has not been away for even sixty days and you say the man is absentee governor which is not the case here”.
Our findings reveal that there are top gear arrangements for a grand reception for the governor whom many are eagerly awaiting. “We are going to bring our supporter’s from all over the state to receive the man. We have done it before and we are going to do it again. This is the people’s governor and we will do everything to honour him” a source at the PDP secretariat said
Though there has been no official statement on the planned return of the governor, impeccable sources have confirmed that there will be a series of activities to welcome the governor from his accumulated leave. Among them is a planned media event in Lagos next week and the mobilization of bus loads of PDP faithfuls from across the state to sing praises to welcome the governor on arrival at the Margaret Ekpo International Airport.
