The Police in Zone 6, Calabar, yesterday 28th August 2014 arrested and arraigned the former editor of CrossRiverWatch, now publisher of mycrossriver.com, Mr. Emmanuel Unah for alleged complicity in the ongoing trial of the killer cops.
CrossRiverWatch gathered that Mr. Emma Unah had been contacted by the killer cops from detention to help them run a counter media campaign against what they called, ‘negative media reports about their ordeal.’
A police source who spoke to CrossRiverWatch upon enquiries on why Mr. Unah was arrested said, having accepted the job, “Mr. Unah came to the station yesterday and attempted to smuggle documents to the suspects who are still in detention after their dismissal on Wednesday without permission of the charge room officer in-charge of duty at the station. We have reason to reasonably believe that he is collaborating with the suspects and that is a punishable offence.
“We were aware he is a journalist and you his colleagues will start bombarding us with questions when you hear of his arrest so we had to quickly take him to court since the evidence was still with him because we caught him with the documents red handed and they included among other things, news cuttings of the propaganda he has been doing for them in the media.”
Mr. Unah, age 45 from Yala Local Government Area was then charged to the Magistrate Court of Cross River State by the Police with charge number MC/640C/2014.
The charge sheet reads, “That you Emmanuel Unah ‘M’ on the 27th day of August 2014 at about 1850hrs, at zone 6 Police Headquarters, Calabar in the Calabar Magisterial District did conduct yourself in a manner likely to cause breach of the Peace by coming into the station with a document to be delivered to a suspect detained in the cell without permission of the charge room officer in-charge of duty at the station, an offence punishable under section 249 (D) of the criminal code C 16 VOL 111, Laws of Cross River State of Nigeria 2014”.
The accused was released on bail at the sum of 200, 000 naira and the Police Prosecutor is Inspector Udo Akpan.
Reacting to the development, Barrister James Ibor of Basic Right Council, who appeared in Court for Mr. Unah said: “I was startled this afternoon after making appearance for Emma Unah when I discovered that he was arrested for illegally smuggling documents into the police cell which according to the police was to aid their detainees to circumvent justice. I will recall that, the said Emma Unah had privileged and confidential information about the extra judicial killing of Derek Maurice Ben and five others.
“I am still in shock that Emma Unah will turn around and expose me and my client to danger, especially given the character of the murderers (Police Officers) who have consistently threatened my life for daring to expose their excesses to say the least, Emma Unah is a traitor and his conduct unconscionable, unprofessional and unethical”.
In a recent publication by mycrossriver.com dated 27 August 2014, the medium described the six victims of the extra judicial killings as armed robbers against the background of an official police investigation by the police authorities in Zone 6, Calabar which revealed unassailable evidence that indicted the killer cops and led to their dismissal.
