In the early hours of yesterday (between 2:30 am and 3:30am) residents of Inyang Ekeng street, Calabar South, Calabar were thrown into confusion as unidentified gun men numbering over 6 in number, raided the Celestial Church of Christ, CCC on the street carting away thousands of naira and personal belongings of the church occupants.
CrossRiverWatch was unable to meet the Shepherd of the church for comments as he was not disposed at the time of visit by our reporter but a neighbor who gave his name as Eyo Ekpenyong told our reporter that “This issue of robbery in recent times is alarming, imagine in less than one month this street has been successfully robbed thrice with several failed attempts, Colombo’s and other bad gang now frequent this area because they have seen how vulnerable we are”.
He went on to lament that “This street which is just in front of the Hawkins cemetery was once a dead zone where 7pm don’t meet you outside your house or else you are on your own, for some time now the place was calm but it is becoming something else, this axis of Calabar South is usually very dark at night from 8pm, dark to the point that anyone passing without touch light cannot be indentified for over three years now we have not had public power supply because our transformer was vandalized and only very few can afford generating set and those with it don’t on their security light because it has become a sign that the people are well to do, we don’t have street lights; the ones placed at Ewa Ekeng road has never worked for one day since over a year ago and same to the one at Hawkins road”.
Another resident who spoke on anonymity said, “We have tried all our possible best to ensure that we get the transformer working but to no avail; before this last time the transformer was vandalized stealing of parts from it was on a daily basis, we tried to protect it but we could not do all because the transformer then was not protected like the recent ones I see in metal cage, the police could not help us get the culprits and everyone just got fed up, we had written to the state government, the power authority, and a host of others but to no avail”.
Going further, the anonymous lady on behalf of the affected people appealed to the state government, the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC and other well meaning Nigerians to support the street with alternative power supply.
