The Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON), Cross River State office has raided and confiscated unspecified number of expired and substandard products ranging from vehicle tires, packaged food items as well as electric wires in Calabar, the State capital.
The streets affected by the ongoing raid for substandard products are Bedwell, Nelson Mandela, Target, Ndidem Usang Iso and MCC to WAPI, a radius cutting across the two local government areas that make up the State capital, Calabar South and Municipality.
The State SON Director, Mr. Udeme Udom expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the exercise, calling it a successful.
He added that “the exercise is to ensure a level playing field in imported and locally manufactured markets by regulating products as well as prevent unfair market competition.”
Mr. Udom said the exercise was a national clamp down on expired and substandard products across the country to mitigate economic loss to importers.
Concluding, he said: “the punishment for those caught in the selling of expired and counterfeit food items will be prosecution.”
Some of those found wanting denied knowledge of having fake products, though some marketers resisted and refused access to their premises.
