University Of Calabar Students’ Union Government Inaugurates Parliament

The Students’ Union Government (SUG), University of Calabar has inaugurated its parliament. The ceremony which held at the parliamentary hall of the Students’ Union Government, Malabor was graced by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Zana Akpagu among other management staff.

Addressing the Parliamentarians and those present, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Zana Akpagu who was represented by the Chairman Calabar University Electoral Commission (CUOECO), Dr. Patrick Egaga charged the students to use the opportunity given to them to contribute their quota to build a University devoid of academic rancor through legislation aimed at creating synergy.

He ended by stating that his administration is ready to leave up to expectation and would stop at nothing in making the students’ welfare its priority.

Performing the inauguration ceremony, the SUG President, Comrade Joseph Daniel admonished members of the Parliament to see themselves as servants of their various constituencies chosen from among their equals for service.

His words: “You cannot afford to deliver on the mandate given by your constituents, the Executive needs the support of the Legislature and the Judiciary to succeed. The three arms are inter-woven, it’s your duty as Parliamentarians to call the Executive to order, while doing this, it must be in the spirit of brotherhood, love and sincerity of purpose, we must desist from the use of the word NATO in this Parliament.”

Speaking further, the President reiterated that there was virtually no need for students to fight over little things when there is much out there, he enjoined the Parliament to explore every avenue within its reach in resolving her differences in contrast to the barbaric and out-dated use of quarrels and fighting among members and most often the Executive.

The Principal Officers of the Parliament include Francis Effiong, Senate President, Ifiok Ibokette Udeme, Deputy Senate President, Echem John Chinonso, Scribe while Eyong Helen is to serve as Sergeant-At-Arms.

In his acceptance speech, the Senate President, Effiong Francis, thanked members of the Parliament for the confidence reposed on him and promised to run an inclusive administration and concluded by calling on all hands to be on deck to ensure a successful tenure.
