Two elderly men accused of witchcraft were set ablaze by an angry mob Sunday in Ikot Effanga, area of Akpabuyo LGA Cross River State.
The deceased, Chief Bassey Ekwe, 69 and Mr. Asuquo Effiong, 72, were accused of being the cause of the death of young men in the village.
According to a witness, Obori Bassey who is also the son of one of the deceased, the whole issue started when someone died in the community and some members of the family said the man’s death was mysterious.
Bassey recounted how the family of the man who died then visited a native doctor, Monday Augustine, who told them he will get the person who killed the man.
He said the native doctor led the family who carried the corpse on their shoulders round the village while pouring libations and conjuring spirits.
Obori added that on getting to the front of their compound they started dancing and his father who didn’t know what was happening came out and curiously asked them what was wrong only for the native doctor to point and say he killed the man.
The family of the dead man and some persons who were with them immediately pounced on Bassey’s father and set him ablaze, while they later went to grab a second man accused by the native doctor, who was also set ablaze by the mob.
At the time of filing this report, the Police had waded into the matter and three suspects have been arrested including the native doctor while the case has been moved from the Ikot Nakanda Police division to the State Head Quarters, Calabar.
