Cross River Deputy Governor, Professor Ivara Esu has assured that the state government will organize local government elections.
But, he does not know exactly when due to challenges faced by the administration.
“The Cross River State Government will hold local government elections. But, there are a number of things that we will be taking into considerations which one will not want to say in public,” said Professor Esu in an interview shortly after commissioning the secretariat of the Association of Cross River Online Journalists in Calabar on Thursday.
The elections were billed to hold in 2016 before the expiration of the last local government administrations in December of that year.
But, legal tussles and lack of funds were fingered as the cause by several staff of the administration. The Chairman of the State’s Independent Electoral Commission, Dr. Mike Ushie told CrossRiverWatch that the commission’s funding was not first line charge.
However, despite fixing early 2017 as the date for elections, it was postponed twice with no information concerning when it will eventually hold.
And, Professor Esu, who reiterated the state government’s resolve to organize the elections, decline stating a the time.
He averred that: “I assure you that the local government elections will hold. It is exactly when it will hold that I can’t say.”
