In preparation for the nationwide peaceful protest organized by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) slated for 27th and 28th February 2024, the Commissioner of Police in Cross River State Command, CP Augustine Grimah, has outlined stringent security measures to ensure the safety and success of the exercise in the State.
In a press statement, signed by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Irene Ugbo, for the Commissioner, CP Grimah emphasized the importance of maintaining a peaceful atmosphere during the protest and cautioned the NLC leadership against allowing miscreants to hijack the exercise.
In a meeting with the NLC leaders on Monday at the Command Headquarters Diamond Hill, Calabar, he urged them to prioritize the interests of the State and the well-being of its citizens.
While acknowledging the constitutional right of the NLC to conduct peaceful protests, CP Grimah advised that the exercise should take place at the NLC secretariat.
He recommended that the leaders address the press, articulate their grievances, and disperse peacefully after that.
CP Grimah said the approach aims to prevent any opportunity for miscreants to disrupt the protest and cause chaos.
The Command restated its resolve to provide adequate security coverage to the public throughout the protest to safeguard participants and maintain law and order.
Grimah reaffirmed the commitment of the police to uphold the rights of citizens while ensuring the safety and security of all residents in the State.
He urges all stakeholders to cooperate with law enforcement agencies to guarantee a peaceful and successful protest that upholds the principles of democracy and civic engagement.
