Cross River Police Clears ‘SA On Signpost Removal’ Viral Video Claim

Cross River State Police Command

The Cross River State Police Command has clarified claims on the viral video alleging that a police officer was removing street signposts along Akai Effa Road near Power Line in Calabar on the directive of the State Governor.

In a press statement issued on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, explained that the claim circulating online does not reflect the true situation.

According to the Command, the removal of the signposts is part of the ongoing street naming and house numbering exercise being implemented by the Calabar Municipal Local Government Council after weeks of public sensitization and notifications to residents through various media platforms.

The statement disclosed that the exercise is being carried out by Dernkal Global Resources Ltd, a consultant engaged by the local government council and the individual captured in the viral video removing the signpost is an employee of the company and not a police officer.

The Police Command noted that its personnel were deployed only to provide security for the consultants while carrying out their lawful duties and to ensure the maintenance of public peace and order. It emphasized that no police officer participated in the removal of any street signpost.

The Command urged members of the public to avoid originating, sharing, or amplifying false, misinformation , misleading, or unverified information capable of causing unnecessary public anxiety or eroding confidence in public institutions.

It also encouraged residents to verify information through official channels before sharing it on social media.
