Reporting IDPs: CISLAC Commissions 25 Man Media Group In Calabar

The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has commissioned a group of 25 journalists in Cross River State to beam their search light on matters of Internally Displaced Persons (IDP’s) in the State.

Commissioning the group after a Media Dialogue on Internal Displacement in Nigeria with the journalists at Axari hotel Calabar, Mr. Nsa Gill, Editor of The Median emerged Team Lead.

The dialogue which focused on advancing the work of media practitioners in humanitarian assistance in Nigeria was described as a necessity by the facilitator, Mr. Okeke Anya.

According to him, “Displacement issue is common in our society and it can happen to anyone and in many ways which has negative effects to the society.”

Tasking the 25 journalists Okeke said, “With all these happenings, it will be nice to see journalists play their roles. The media has a lot of responsibility in mitigating and proffering platforms for solutions.”

Also on his part, Mr. Austin Erameh said, “The media is instrumental in many ways, this engagement is as a result of lessons learnt from previous activities.”

Adding that, “We also aim at using this medium to get the media abreast with certain frameworks that will make your work easier and ensure you work in line with best humanitarian practices.”

The dialogue which is part of CISLAC project on “Engaging Non-State Actors towards a National Internally Displaced Persons Policy and Act in Nigeria” is supported by the Embassy of Switzerland in Nigeria and in collaboration with the UN Refugee Agency.

High point of the dialogue was a strategic session on understanding the draft National Policy on Internally Displaced Persons (IDP’s).

The mandate of the media group is to closely work together in broadening the discuss on IDP’s.
