The member representing Obudu/Obanliku/Bekwarra in the Federal House of Representatives, Honorable Legor Idagbo has said that the legislative immunity bill assented to by President Muhammadu Buhari will aid national and sub national legislators become more effective.
Mr. Idagbo stated this Sunday in Calabar while speaking as a guest on The Dialogue With Agba Jalingo; a weekly topical issues program on Hit 95.9 FM where he pointed out that Nigeria was almost the only country without such a law.
President Buhari had recently assented to the bill which provides partial immunity for legislators and bars suits against them for actions taken during plenary, sittings and other legislative activities.
And, Mr. Idagbo argued that contrary to the opinions that the legislators were only trying to shield themselves, it was actually a tool for them to be more effective as they won’t be bothered by court proceedings over their job.
He cited a scenario where almost the entire Senate followed the Senate President chairman of the national assembly, Mr. Bukola Saraki to court in a show of solidarity which its recurrence, will affect the output of the legislators.
