Despite the stand of the Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission (CROSIEC); citing non compliance with the State Electoral Act by the newly registered All Progressives Congress (APC) and disqualifying the party from fielding candidates during the Saturday local government elections in Cross River State, some of the candidates have kicked off their campaigns.

A CrossRiverWatch reporter who monitored the campaigns yesterday from Mayne Avenue, Nelson Mandela, Goldie, Mary Slessor and Etim-Edem Market, all in Calabar South, reports that the campaigns look robust and strong as many supporters of the party were seen dancing to the drums and trumpets with brooms in their hands.

The campaign trail caused traffic in those areas making commuters to take alternative routes to their destinations.

Also in Calabar Municipality, some of the campaign teams of the All Progressives Congress APC were sighted along Big Qua and State Housing axis of the town.

Some of the party members on the campaign train who spoke with CrossRiverWatch said CROSIEC and the ruling People’s Democratic Party PDP in the State are afraid of the daily increase in the momentum of acceptability that APC is enjoying from Cross Riverians after the merger of the three political parties namely ACN, ANPP and CPC.

“CROSIEC which is supposed to be a commission has turned itself to an extension of a ministry under the Imoke’s government and listen to their paymasters rather than being an umpire. In the spirit of our Lord Jesus Christ, we shall contest this election.” One of the respondents said.

The Cross River state chapter of APC had dragged CROSIEC to the Calabar High Court over what it described as illegal expulsion of the party from fielding candidates in next Saturday’s local government elections in the State.

A ruling is still expected before weekend which will determine whether the elections will be postponed or will go ahead as scheduled.
