The Liyel Imoke-led administration has only 49 days left and the former power and steel minister is yet to “do something” about the Utugwang-Okworogung-Mbube road as promised.
The Abi born politician had on January 22, 2015 promised the people of Okworogung in Utugwang area of Obudu local government that he will “do something” about the state of the road during his project commissioning and inspection tour which also doubled as the People Democratic Party campaign tour.
CrossRiverWatch in a report titled “Imoke’s Project Commissioning Tour In Bekwarra And Obudu Questions Monitoring Unit’s Efficiency” criticized the efficiency of the project monitoring, evaluation and implementation team of the various tiers of government as almost all the roads leading to the project sites were either abandoned or incomplete projects on their own leaving them in a worse state than they were before construction work began.
More than two months after, while covering the elections in Obudu, our reporter visited the Okworogung axis of the Utugwang-Okworogung-Mbube road and found out it had become worse than it was in January with the rains creating deep craters in the earth road with attendant devastating evidence of erosion.
The locals who spoke with CrossRiverWatch mostly laughed at our reporter and wondered, “Wait, you expect them to really work on this road?” asks Ekunke Dominic “we are used to it, we only hope the incoming administration does better.” he says.
A cyclist who simply gave his name as Osama while washing his motorcycle said “My brother na so e be, I personally cheered when he said that but I expected the worst which is gradually playing out”.
With the completion of the general elections which seemingly saw every other thing suspended, the question remains “will governor Imoke ‘do something’ about this project and others before his tenure constitutionally runs out on May 29?
