Cross River state will now be the only state in the South/South geo-political zone left without properly constituted LGAs after Bayelsa state announced that LG elections will be holding in the state July 27, 2019.
After a brief stint by caretaker committees under former governor, Donald Duke, it has been a rarity in the state since then. But close to three years now after the expiration of the tenure of the last elected LG chairmen, several shifts in date, occasioned by lack of funds have stopped the Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission CROSIEC, from conducting the elections.
The ruling PDP in the state even sold intent forms to aspirants for chairmanship and councilorship aspirants, who had already started campaigns before the elections were shifted indefinitely. The party later promised to refund money for aspirants who had already purhased forms but that promised never saw the light of day.
This delay has also left Cross River state among the only six states, out of 36 and FCT, that are yet to conduct LGA elections.
Apart from Cross River in the South South zone, Anambra state is yet to conduct LG elections in the South East zone. All the states of the South West zone, all have their LGAs properly constituted and running and in the North Central zone, Niger and Kogi states, are yet to also conduct their own LG elections.
President Buhari’s home state, Katsina, in the North West zone is also left behind along with Borno in the North East zone.
