Youths have been encouraged to strive to learn new skills so as to be self sufficient and independent.

This advice was given by Mr. Adewunmi Olatunji the Coordinator of a Lagos based NGO, Capacity Development and Skills Acquisition Initiative at a skill acquisition and entrepreneurship training workshop organized by the NGO in collaboration with the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Jesus Sanctuary in Calabar.

Speaking further, Olatunji said “It is in view of that ,that we have decided to organize this training and we hope to make the over 500 persons here present entrepreneurs, as they can be able to startup their own business using skills acquired during this period”.

That is why we go as far as teaching them how to monetize their skills and a lucky few will get needed startup tools from us” he said.

On his part, the Youth President of the church, Anni Agabi Egbiji said “The essence of the program is to empower the youths and make them profitable to themselves and their societies, because we live in a world where certificate doesn’t necessary guarantee jobs.”

Some of the participants who spoke to CrossRiverWatch expressed delight over the training.

Phillip Effiong who said he is a student of the University of Calabar said he needed the extra skill for “competitive advantage”.

The training which started on Tuesday, 7th July is to last 28 days with participants undergoing training in shoe and bag making, catering , event planning, cinematography, computer repairs, etc
