The fear of Ebola has stirred Congo Republic further than expected, as the country that is billed to tango Nigeria in a 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Calabar on September 6 has asked the Confederation of African Football, CAF to change the venue of the encounter.
Citing recent reports of Ebola virus incursion into Nigeria through a Liberian national, Patrick Sawyer and smatterings of reported cases across the nation, Congo’s football federation has now made a formal plea to Confederation of African Football (CAF) to relocate next weekend’s first leg clash against the Super Eagles.
With the fear of Ebola in mind, Congo have submitted a letter to CAF requesting a new venue for their Group A opener of the Morocco 2015 AFCON qualifiers against Nigeria.
Diables Rouges booked their spot in the qualifiers of the continental showpiece after the team that initially sent them packing, Rwanda were barred from taking part for fielding ineligible striker, Dady Birori, but the Congolese are now concerned with the health of their team, following reports about Ebola in Nigeria.
The spread of the deadly virus in West Africa has already led CAF to ask for the relocation of Guinea v Togo and Sierra-Leone v DR Congo, while some question marks have been raised about Côte d’Ivoire v Sierra Leone, a point that Congo coach, Claude Leroy is now citing in the team’s search for a switch in venue.
